Describe your biz
JK Creative Studio specialises in brand, graphic and website design.
Most professional service businesses outgrow their brand design or are too busy to keep their branding up-to date and consistent. This means they get lost in the market, miss out on new clients and waste time. This is why I design memorable, consistent brands that stand out, capture your business vision and align you as the go-to in your market.
Tell us how your business came to be
It started as a side hustle; when I was on maternity leave and my daughter was 8 months I started picking up freelance design work. I landed some exciting branding projects and had regular work with some great clients. I got to the stage that I was busy enough that I confidently resigned from my full time job in corporate.
What are three things you could help other members with?
Logo + brand design: A strategic brand will leave you with the clarity and confidence you need to promote your business and help your customers choose you over your competitors. My brand projects begin with strategy and end with a beautiful, cohesive brand identity.
Website design: Let’s design a website that not only reflects your brand identity but also ensure seamless user engagement, combining professionalism with a welcoming touch to create an online presence that truly stands out.
Canva brand alignment:
I can help you get set up in Canva, where I'll design templates that are aligned with your branding, streamlining the process for you to create designs across all your marketing materials with ease and consistency.
Has there been a significant business mentor in your career?
Yes! My husband actually! He also runs his own business so we are each other’s sounding board for all the quirks that come with running a business!
What’s your approach on ‘the juggle’?
I think going from a “9-5” style work structure to juggling school and daycare drop offs / pickups I’m learning to tick off tasks in smaller time blocks. Getting out of the house (studio) also helps, even if it’s a couple of hours working at a café. I’ve even found online co-working sessions with other designers so great to bounce ideas off and be accountable for productivity!
What does mumbition mean to you? (the unapologetic blending of motherhood and ambition)
I think after having a baby I realised I wanted the flexibility of working my own hours and been able to spend time with my family. Don’t get me wrong there have been many late nights keeping up with projects and stressing about having enough work but I wouldn’t trade it! I hope I am teaching my daughters that they can have a fulfilling and loving life as well as a profession that they thrive in (with a bit of fierce drive and passion).
What’s your approach to dealing with the pressures of running your business?
My word this year is ‘balance’. For work, balance is making time to work on the business as well as in the business! As someone with anxiety (I also had postnatal depression), prioritising my mental health is important, this means not over booking myself, avoid late nights working and making time to exercise.
If we looked through your bookmarks what would we find?
Sooooooo many Pinterest mood boards!
What are your favourite business tools (and why?)
- I use Trello to help track and manage projects, I love a ‘to-do’ list so it's great I can also add life admin tasks into one organised board!
- I am loving Gmail email templates (I only just discovered this recently!) I now have my regular emails such as onboarding or proposals setup in templates, a massive time saver!
- Canva. Once you have your brand design (I recommend using a graphic or brand designer to get clear on your brand direction and visuals) its so easy to set up a brand kit in Canva. You can then start creating designs such as social posts or presentations that are consistent and aligned with your brand.
What’s the best part of being part of the Mums & Co community?
The opportunity to network as well as been supported. Lucy messaged me earlier in the year checking in and asking if there was anything I need help within my business.
How has Mums & Co helped you?
Attending the ‘practice your pitch’ session last year with Carrie, it was valuable and gave me some clarity on my messaging. I have also been loving the recent Instagram posts on tips for balancing business and family.
