For the past 20 years, Dr Delia McCabe has combined her knowledge of the human brain with research into how food influences brain function, specifically in regard to female stress. Delia offers an evidence-based approach using specific foods, combined with psychological and neurological strategies, to improve mood, concentration, memory and learning ability, and help us stay calm and happy in a stressful world. She is the author of two internationally available books, Feed Your Brain - 7 Steps to a Lighter, Brighter You and Feed Your Brain - The Cookbook.

What is #mumbition to you?

Feeling calm, focused and energised every day so that I can pursue my best life and support those who want to do the same.

What is it that makes you want to get out of bed in the morning?

A few things – teaching about and learning more about our wonderfully sophisticated brain, so that I can support more women to better physical and mental wellbeing – but I’m also an environmentalist and wildlife lover and am especially passionate about freeing as many bile bears from cages as I can.

What are you looking forward to at the Be MPowered Conference 2021?

The combined energy, ambition, focus, and passion of Mums who want to make a difference in their own and other lives is very inspiring – and the support we can offer each other during this event is priceless!

What makes the topic you are talking about at Be MPowered important to small biz owners right now?

We live in a complex and competitive world and women have an important role to play in making the world a better place. But we can feel tired, stretched (and stressed) as well as very overwhelmed with what we have to do to achieve. When we’re clear on what our values and priorities are, and our brain is well nourished, it’s so much easier to surge ahead and achieve our dreams.

What makes you an expert in your field?

Being a neuroscientist with a background in psychology and a PhD in female stress and nutrition, I can speak to what the female brain needs to function optimally, as well as how our mindset, personality and neural makeup can be tweaked to help us achieve optimally.

How do you harmonise your ambition, livelihood and wellbeing?

By always coming back to what my primary values are, which inform my priorities. And, having experienced adrenal fatigue, self-care is a core value!

What advice would you give anyone starting a small business?

I need help with this rather than giving advice ☺

How do you relax when you are not working?

Yoga, reading, gardening, walking, beach swims and walks and the occasional Netflix binge!

Give us an interesting fact about you that not many people know.

I lived on an organic farm for nearly 13 years, that had a resident female leopard, who had a new cub every year, and I never saw the Mum or any of the babies but saw their spoor in the riverbeds and heard them at night.

What is your favourite productivity hack?

I leave a little work (10 – 15 minutes max) on my desk in the afternoon for me to complete the next morning. In this way I never have to start something from scratch in the morning but can quickly jump into feeling productive – an immediate dopamine hit from accomplishing a task early in the morning!

What are you a superstar at?

I’m good at explaining complex science. And making very yummy and healthy chocolate treats ☺

What do you suck at doing?

If my life depended on it, or my children’s lives, I cannot draw! I’m so bad that even when my children were very little (and had very active imaginations) they’d tell me that they couldn’t recognise anything I drew – and neither could anyone else – not then and not now!

What are you currently bingeing on Netflix?

Hinterland.

Anything else you would like to add...

Women are the most amazing creatures! We carry life, we stretch ourselves to breaking point to nurture and support those we love, and we’re happy to put ourselves second for them too. We need to take better care of ourselves so that we can live healthier, happier and more successful lives – which serves our loved ones too!
